Salinity tolerance in freshwater shrimps: A comparative study

Abstract
Freshwater shrimps are crucial components of
aquatic ecosystems, playing a vital role in nutrient cycling and serving as
both predators and prey in their ecosystems. However, their salinity tolerance
varies significantly among species, influencing their distribution, behavior,
and survival. This study investigates the salinity tolerance of Palaemon
sewelli and other freshwater shrimps, comparing their physiological responses
to different salinity levels. Our results show that Palaemon sewelli exhibits a
moderate level of salinity tolerance, while other species display varying
degrees of adaptability. Understanding the salinity tolerance of these shrimps
can inform conservation efforts and aquaculture practices. The findings of this
study have significant implications for the management of freshwater ecosystems
and the conservation of freshwater shrimp populations. By exploring the salinity
tolerance of these shrimps, we can better understand their ecological niches
and develop effective management plans for their habitats. Furthermore, this
study contributes to our understanding of the complex interactions between
freshwater shrimps and their environment, highlighting the importance of
considering salinity tolerance in conservation and management strategies. The
results of this study can be used to inform the development of conservation
plans and aquaculture practices that take into account the salinity tolerance
of freshwater shrimps.
